D-day The Oral History Bok
Eighty years on, D-Day The Oral History is a fresh and significant new history of arguably the most important day of the 20th Century.

On 6th June 1944, the Allied invasion began. For hours, wave after wave of soldiers, sailors, and airmen crossed the channel and stormed the Normandy coast, fighting to gain a foothold in Nazi-occupied Northwest Europe. It was the largest combined air and seaborne invasion ever, involving over 150,000 Allied troops on the ground, and its eventual success became a critical turning point in the war, spelling the beginning of the end for the Third Reich.

As the events of that day fade from living memory, it's more important than ever to understand what it felt like to be there and to live through it, on both sides. In this definitive work, Garrett M. Graff, the bestselling author of The Only Plane in the Sky: The Oral History of 9/11, compiles over 600 US, Canadian, UK, French and German voices to tell the full story of exactly how that historic day unfolded, in visceral detail - as well as the weeks and months leading up to it. From paratroopers to fighter pilots to nurses, generals, French villagers, German Defenders to Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt, this is the most intimate re-telling of D-Day published to date.

Praise for THE ONLY PLANE IN THE SKY:

"The most moving and chilling oral history you will read." The Times

"Incredibly evocative and compelling." The Washington Post

"A hugely powerful new book." Dan Snow

"Astonishing book about an astonishing, terrifying atrocity, relived in real time by those who were there. I read it in one sitting & was utterly gripped from start to finish." Piers Morgan

Goodbye, Eastern Europe Bok
In light of Russia's aggressive 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Goodbye, Eastern Europe is a crucial, elucidative read, a sweeping epic chronicling a thousand years of strife, war, and bloodshed, from pre-Christianity to the fall of Communism-illuminating the remarkable cultural significance and richness of a place perpetually lost to the margins of history.

Eastern Europe, the moniker, has gone out of fashion since the fall of the Soviet Union. Ask someone now, and they might tell you that Estonia is in the Baltics, or Scandinavia, that Slovakia is in Central Europe and Croatia is in the Eastern Adriatic or the Balkans. In fact, Eastern Europe is a place that barely exists at all, except in cultural memory. Yet it remains a powerful marker of identity for many, with a fragmented and wide history, defined by texts, myths, and memories of centuries of hardship and suffering.

Goodbye, Eastern Europe is a masterful narrative about a place that has survived the brink of being forgotten. Beginning with long-lost accounts of early pagan life, Mikanowski offers a kaleidoscopic tour recounting the rise and fall of the great empires-Ottoman, Hapsburg, and Russian-the dawn of the modern era, the ravages of Fascism and Communism, as well as Capitalism, the birth of the modern nation-state, and more. A student of literature, history, and the ghosts of his own family's past, Mikanowski paints a magisterial portrait of a place united by diversity, and eclecticism, and a people with the shared story of being the dominated rather than the dominating.

The result is a loving and ebullient celebration of the distinctive and vibrant cultures that stubbornly persisted at the margins of Western Europe, and a powerful corrective that re-centers our understanding of how the modern Western world took shape.

Life-line Lost - The Rise And Fall Of Neutral Sweden's Secret Reserv Option Bok
How did Sweden's secret life-line to the West wither? Early in the Cold War, the inner cabinet authorised covert preparations for wartime military cooperation with the West. Wide-ranging arrangements were made during the 1950s and 1960s. But by the 1970s these preparations were faltering, and by the mid-1980s the remaining plans were destroyed. This book explores this neglected aspect of Sweden's secret ties to the West. By comparing the evolution of the preparations with the evolution of the government's official line on Sweden's policy, it is shown that the demise of the preparations was caused by a gradually more dogmatic and strident official line. This made the maintenance of preparations more sensitive and difficult. In the end, the life-line intended to secure Sweden's survival as a nation was sacrificed to protect a declaratory policy originally meant mainly for public consumption.

Robert Dalsjö is a senior analyst with the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). He has published articles and reports on wide a range of international security issue, including naval strategy, conventional arms control, peace-support operations, Nato enlargement, and Baltic security.
