When Alfred performs an awe-inspiring trick for which there seems no logical explanation, the friendly competition shared between the pair turns to deadly rivalry as the enraged Rupert determines to uncover his rival's deepest secrets. 'The Dark Knight' (2008), the sequel to 'Batman Begins' (2005), sees Gotham's hero squaring-up to a new kid on the block - psychotic prankster The Joker (Heath Ledger). In the space of a year, Batman, aided by Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and new District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), has managed to rid Gotham's streets of the organised crime gangs that once ravaged the city. Things seem to be looking up, although on the personal front, Bruce Wayne discovers he has a rival in his affections for main squeeze Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in the shape of the new D.A., who, as a political climber, likes to keep his cards close to his chest. But just when the authorities think they're finally making progress in their fight against crime, the appearance on the streets of a sinister new figure, with a demented grin and a passion for chaos, causes panic among the good people of Gotham, and leads to a battle of wits between Batman and The Joker which threatens to get extremely personal. In 'Inception' (2010) Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a professional thief with a difference: the spoils he goes after are not material objects but the thoughts, dreams and secrets buried in the minds of other people. This rare talent has cost him dear, rendering him a solitary fugitive stripped of everything he ever really cared about. When he is offered a chance for redemption by reversing the process and planting an idea rather than stealing it, he and his team of specialists find themselves pitted against a dangerous enemy that appears to pre-empt their every move. 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012), set eight years on from the events of 'The Dark Knight', sees Batman returning to save Gotham City from the evil clutches of brutal terrorist Bane (Tom Hardy) and his enigmatic sidekick, Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway). However, Batman's ability to act as an avenging angel is curtailed by the fact that he is now on Gotham City Police Department's Most Wanted list, having assumed responsibility for the crimes of deceased District Attorney Harvey Dent. In 'Interstellar' (2014), on a resource-depleted Earth in the near future, the discovery of a wormhole which can transport users through time and space unites scientists and explorers in the most important mission in human history. Among the potential travellers is a widowed engineer (Matthew McConaughey) who must decide whether to remain with his two children or to test the limits of human space travel, to see if there is a future for humanity out among the stars or whether the end of the Earth spells the end for humanity. 'Dunkirk' (2017) tells the story of the Dunkirk evacuation during the Second World War. In May 1940, hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers are trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk after being pushed back by the German army during the Battle of France, prompting a massive rescue operation to evacuate them. As the evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, gets underway, the soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force holds a shrinking position as the Nazis advance upon them. Meanwhile, civilian sailors back home are called upon to use whatever vessels they have to aid the rescue effort across the Channel as the Royal Air Force tries to defend the vulnerable troops on the ground from the skies. Finally, in 'Tenet' (2020), while attempting to foil a terrorist attack in Kiev, the Protagonist (John David Washington) learns of a future technology capable of reversing time. His first test subject is Caesar (Andy Serkis), the prototype of a new breed of ape with human-like intelligence. But when Caesar breaks free a revolution is triggered and an epic war for supremacy breaks out between humankind and the primates of the world. In 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' (2014) Caesar, now the leader of a growing band of cognisant simians, starts the process towards a truce between the apes and the humans. Many consider the outbreak of war to only be a matter of time however, since the human population has been vastly reduced by a devastating virus and their role as the dominant species on Earth is in question. As the tension increases it may only take a single spark to trigger an explosive war that will pit the humans against the apes in an all-out battle for survival. Finally, in 'War for the Planet of the Apes' (2017), Caesar finds himself and his kind trapped in a war with the humans led by Colonel McCullogh (Woody Harrelson). Now, hundreds of years later, with the Decepticons searching for the cube, the Autobots enlist the help of young earthling Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) to help foil the Decepticons' plans for world domination. In 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' (2009), after he glimpses the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers through a powerful vision sent to him by the Allspark, Sam once again finds himself the target of the evil Decepticons, who have returned to Earth under the command of the formidable Starscream (voice of Charles Adler). Joining the Autobots' mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), who forms an alliance with international armies for this second epic battle. In 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' (2011), when the Autobots discover that a Cybertronian spacecraft is hidden on the Moon, a race against the Decepticons ensues as both sides battle to reach it first. In 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' (2014), four years after the invasion of Chicago, mechanic and single parent Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) discovers what he believes to be a dilapidated truck and takes it home to repair. However, what he really has resting in his garage is a deactivated Optimus Prime. When government officials learn of the discovery they try to push humanitarian boundaries in the name of scientific development. Finally, in 'Transformers: The Last Knight' (2017), with the battle between the human race and the Transformers raging on, mechanic Cade Yeager forms an alliance with English Lord Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins) in an attempt to figure out why the Transformers keep returning to Earth. Meanwhile, Autobots leader Optimus Prime learns he was responsible for the death of his home world Cybertron.
