I en av historiens tveklöst bästa äventyrsfilmer bjuds vi på ett sprakande möte mellan Hollywoodgiganterna Katherine Hepburn och Humphrey Bogart. Hepburn är den pryda missionären Rose som flyr undan tyskarna i första världskrigets Belgiska Kongo. Bogart är den oborstade och ginpimplande skepparen Charlie som låter Rose följa med på sin medfarna gamla ångbåt, "Afrikas drottning". Mötet mellan det omaka paret är laddat, nära nog i explosionsnivå, men de tvingas samarbeta för att överleva den livsfarliga färden via jättekrokodiler, blodiglar, väldiga vattenfall och tyskarnas kulsprutekärvar.<br/><br/>För sin legendariska roll belönades Bogart med en Oscar. Hepburn nominerades, men blev utan statyett denna gång. Hon kunde dock trösta sig med att vinna fyra andra Oscars under sin karriär. Än i dag är det rekord för en skådespelare! Även John Hustons regi och Hustons & James Agees manus ärades med nomineringar.
