'Entertaining and vivid... This is a gripping account of an intriguing and little-known Cold War moment' OBSERVER

'Reads like a thriller' THE SUN

The astonishing story of the ten million books that were smuggled across the Iron Curtain during the Cold War.

For almost five decades after the Second World War, Europe was divided by the longest and most heavily guarded border on earth. The Iron Curtain, a near-impenetrable barrier of wire and wall, tank traps, minefields, watchtowers and men with dogs, stretched for 4,300 miles from the Arctic to the Black Sea. No physical combat would take place along this frontier: the risk of nuclear annihilation was too high for that. Instead, the conflict would be fought in the psychological sphere. It was a battle for hearts, minds and intellects.

No one understood this more clearly than George Minden, the head of a covert intelligence operation known as the 'CIA books programme', which aimed to win the Cold War with literature.

From its Manhattan headquarters, Minden's global CIA 'book club' would infiltrate millions of banned titles into the Eastern Bloc, written by a vast and eclectic list of authors, including Hannah Arendt and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, George Orwell and Agatha Christie. Volumes were smuggled on trucks and aboard yachts, dropped from balloons, and hidden in the luggage of hundreds of thousands of individual travellers. Once inside Soviet bloc, each book would circulate secretly among dozens of like-minded readers, quietly turning them into dissidents. Latterly, underground print shops began to reproduce the books, too. By the late 1980s, illicit literature in Poland was so pervasive that the system of communist censorship broke down, and the Iron Curtain soon followed.

Charlie English tells this true story of spycraft, smuggling and secret printing operations for the first time, highlighting the work of a handful of extraordinary people who risked their lives to stand up to the intellectual strait-jacket Stalin created. People like Miroslaw Chojecki, an underground Polish publisher who endured beatings, force-feeding and exile in service of this mission. And Minden, the CIA's mastermind, who didn't waver in his belief that truth, culture, and diversity of thought could help free the 'captive nations' of Eastern Europe. This is a story about the power of the printed word as a means of resistance and liberation. Books, it shows, can set you free.

Start with Yourself is a game-changing, no-BS guide for anyone seeking meaningful success on their own terms. It's an essential framework that will give you the tools and mindset to unlock your full potential in life and business-straight from a woman who defied all the odds to become a serial entrepreneur, cofounder of culture-defining global businesses, a non-profit champion and host of the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast. All while raising a family of four children.

Based on the factors of her early life-she's the child of a working-class single mother who grew up in a rough neighborhood in East London and dropped out of high school-you'd never guess that Emma Grede would go on to become one of America's richest self-made women.

This makes Grede singular and unique, but she's convinced you can do it too: Start with Yourself is a blueprint to her mindset and how she thinks about business and life, structured in easy takeaways, so you can immediately apply her philosophy to what you're trying to build and create.

Among her most blazing insights, Grede identifies what she calls "Old Thoughts": stale thinking, outdated ideas; set-in-stone rules ingrained into the culture about work life balance, the crassness of money and the unseemliness of ambition-which aren't actually rules at all. They're biases, Grede insists, system errors, and we must strike them from our minds in order to create a greater sense of control, even mastery, over our day-to-day and long-range goals.

Ultimately, this is a book for everyone tired of feeling like a bystander or passenger in their own life. Grede offers tangible and applicable-right-now solutions to create a mindset, an overall system of thought to manage emotions, clarify ideas, and illuminate the right next step-while always staying positive.

It's about gathering yourself after failure. It's about being accountable but also forgiving yourself. It's about not expecting shortcuts while never being bashful about grabbing them when they appear. It's about pushing hard for wins and never apologizing for your dreams.

Above all, Grede offers a new vision for work and life that encourages readers everywhere to take responsibility for their own thinking to achieve personal and professional success at the highest levels.

'A truly fascinating must-read' - Elinor Cleghorn, bestselling author of Unwell Women
Winner of the Popular Science Award from the British Psychological Society
A Book of the Year in the Daily Telegraph and New Scientist

The history of autism is male. It is time for women and girls to enter the spotlight.

For decades, our understanding of autism has been based on stereotypes of 'socially awkward' men and boys. But this isn't because autism doesn't affect women; it is because the system built to identify it has completely failed them. This blind spot has left generations of women and girls misunderstood and misdiagnosed.

In The Lost Girls of Autism, leading neuroscientist Gina Rippon challenges this biased view of autism and explores the female autistic experience. She reveals how girls on the spectrum learn to 'hide in plain sight' by camouflaging to fit in. Drawing on decades of research and powerful first-person accounts, Rippon shows how the female autistic brain is 'differently different' and urges us to give these lost girls their rightful place on the spectrum.
