Black Keys: Dropout boogie [Vinyl LP]

Robert Plant's Saving Grace, his first album with a new band of distinguished players, is what he calls "a song book of the lost and found." Its genesis was during lockdown in "The Shire," when Plant's customary wandering was all but forbidden. It was in the English countryside that he connected closely to this diverse group of musicians-vocalist Suzi Dian, drummer Oli Jefferson, guitarist Tony Kelsey, banjo and string player Matt Worley, cellist Barney Morse-Brown-who had a shared lean towards his corners of evocative song. Produced by Plant and the band and recorded over six years in the Cotswolds and on the Welsh Borders, Saving Grace breathes fresh life into a treasury of songs by Memphis Minnie, Bob Mosley (Moby Grape), Blind Willie Johnson, The Low Anthem, Martha Scanlan, Sarah Siskind, and Low.

Nonesuch Records releases a fifteenth anniversary edition of Carolina Chocolate Drops' 2010 Grammy Award-winning album Genuine Negro Jig on January 23, 2026. The reissue, featuring founding band members Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robinson, includes the original album and nine bonus tracks: seven previously unreleased tracks plus a 2025 remaster of "City of Refuge" and a 2025 mix of "Memphis Shakedown." This release marks the album's first time on vinyl since its original pressing in 2010. The bonus track "Here Rattler," a traditional tune that Justin Robinson learned from Grand Ole Opry star Grandpa Jones and African American banjoist John Snipes, is available today. It features Robinson on the banjo, Giddens on the fiddle, and Flemons on the rhythm bones.<br/> <br/>Genuine Negro Jig was released on February 16, 2010, reaching the top ten on the Billboard Folk chart and the top of the Bluegrass chart. It won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. Produced by Joe Henry, it was the first of three releases on Nonesuch followed by Carolina Chocolate Drops / Luminescent Orchestrii EP (2011) and the Grammy-nominated album Leaving Eden (2012), produced by Buddy Miller. Widely acclaimed as one of 2010's best, Genuine Negro Jig appeared in year-end lists of NPR, Paste, and more, and was featured in Rolling Stone's 25 Best Country-Soul Albums in 2024. <br/> <br/>"Genuine Negro Jig remains fresh fifteen years later not only because of the Carolina Chocolate Drops' influence on American popular culture but also because it's an excellent record in itself," says Dr. Dwandalyn Reece and Dr. Steven Lewis of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in the album's liner notes. <br/> <br/>Carolina Chocolate Drops formed after band members Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robinson met at the Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, NC in 2005. All three trained in the Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition under the tutelage of Joe Thompson, who was one of the last musicians of his era and his community to carry on the southern Black string band tradition. While old-time Southern string music is often associated with Caucasian musicians from Appalachia, Giddens pointed out in an NPR interview that "it seems that two things get left out of the history books. One, that there was string band music in the Piedmont, period. [And that] Black folk was such a huge part of string tradition." Carolina Chocolate Drops sought to not only correct this misunderstanding but also to keep the centuries-old string music tradition alive and developing.

The Black Keys' twelfth studio album, "Ohio Players" - a title inspired by the legendary funk band of the same name from Dayton, Ohio - features several collaborations between band members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney with various friends and colleagues, such as Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, Beck, Noel Gallagher, Greg Kurstin and others. "We had this epiphany: 'We can call our friends to help us make music,'" says Carney. Auerbach adds, "No matter who we collaborate with, it never feels like we're sacrificing ourselves. It just feels like it adds a special touch... But when it came time to finish the album, it was just Pat and me."

Nonesuch releases a deluxe edition of Wilco's 2004 Grammy Award-winning album A Ghost Is Born. The box set comprises nine vinyl LPs and four CDs - including the original album, alternates, outtakes, and demos, charting the making of A Ghost Is Born-plus the complete 2004 concert recording from Boston's Wang Center and the band's "fundamentals" workshop sessions. It includes sixty-five previously unreleased music tracks as well as a forty-eight-page hardcover book with previously unpublished photos and a new liner note by Grammy-winning writer Bob Mehr. An alternate version of "Handshake Drugs," recorded during the studio sessions at New York's Sear Sound, twenty-one years ago this month, on November 13, 2003, is available now.<br/> <br/>A Ghost Is Born was released commercially on June 22, 2004, debuting at No. 8 on the Billboard chart. The album, which Mehr calls "an eclectic array of dark ballads, upbeat pop songs, Krautrock chug, noise rock freakouts, and roots rock abandon," was widely acclaimed as one of 2004's best, appearing in year-end lists of Mojo, NPR, NME, the Associated Press, The Wire, Rolling Stone, the Village Voice, and Uncut, among many others. The album earned the band its first Grammy, for Best Alternative Music Album. The album also won a Grammy for Best Recording Package.
