Albumet "American V: A hundred highways" innehåller låtar skrivna av låtskrivare som Hank Williams, Rod McKuen, Bruce Springsteen, Don Gibson m fl. Dessutom innehåller albumet två låtar skrivna av Cash själv varav låten "Like the 309" var den sista låt han skrev och spelade in. <br/><br/>"I think that 'American V' may be my favorite of all the albums in the American series. It's different from all the others, it has a much different character. I think that this is as strong an album as Johnny ever made. These songs are Johnny's final statement.
