In 'Ikiru' (1952) a dying man discovers a zest for life and desire to do some good after 30 years of dedicated work for the civil service. When Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura), Chief of the Citizen's Section of the Town Hall, finds he has only six months to live he uses his influence to cut through bureaucratic red tape and give the go-ahead to the construction of a children's park in a poor area. In 'Red Beard' (1965), set at the end of the Tokugawa era, domineering Dr Niide (Toshirô Mifune), known as 'Red Beard', is responsible for training new doctors, among them the lazy and socially ambitious Yasumoto (Yuzo Kayama). However, through a series of lessons in human sufferings, Yasumoto is eventually transformed into a caring doctor. In 'The Lower Depths' (1957), adapted from the play by Maxim Gorky, Sutekichi (Mifune) is a pedlar who hides from the police in a dosshouse. Here he encounters many different characters, including an older woman who is in love with a thief, himself infatuated with a younger woman. In 'I Live in Fear' (1955), at the height of the Cold War, ageing Japanese foundry owner Kiichi Nakajima (Mifune) decides that he and his entire family must emigrate to Brazil in order to find safety from a potential nuclear attack. The rest of the family, unwilling to sell up and move, attempt to have Kiichi declared mentally incompetent. 'Dodes'ka-den' (1970), set in Tokyo, portrays the lives of a variety of slum-dwellers, including the mentally ill Roku-chan (Yoshitaka Zushi) who passes his days pretending to be a conductor on a make-believe tram.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>

'The Immortal One' (1963) stars Jacques Doniol-Valcroze and Françoise Brion as a sad man and a beautiful woman who meet unexpectedly and persue a passionate affair. 'Trans-Europe Express' (1967) tells the story of a film director, Jean (Robbe-Grillet), his producer and his assistant as they ride the Trans-Europe Express train from Paris to Antwerp. In 'The Man Who Lies' (1968), Jean-Louis Trintignant stars as Boris, a man who is believed to have betrayed his country during World War II. After he is taken in by the family of a dead rebel, he witnesses the lesbian affair between the man's sister and a servant and must decide whether to continue down the path of deception or get back on the straight and narrow. 'Eden and After' (1970) is an erotic horror starring Catherine Jourdan and Lorraine Rainer as students who take part in a series of games in a quiet café. In 'N. Rolls the Dice' (1971), a young man who makes a living playing dice becomes haunted by the image of two women with short hair. 'Successive Slidings of Pleasure' (1974) examines the story of a young woman believed to be a witch. When her partner Nora (Olga Georges-Picot) is found dead, stabbed through the heart with a pair of scissors, she is incarcerated in a convent prison where her sexual fantasies are perceived as the devil's work.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD / Box Set</i>

In 'Aguirre, Wrath of God' (1972), a Spanish expedition led by Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski) aims to cross the Peruvian Sierras in search of the legendary Inca city of El Dorado. 'The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser' (1974) stars Bruno Schleinstein as the title character, telling the true story of the German boy who spent the first two decades of his life chained up in a cellar. Set in 18th Century Bolivia, 'Heart of Glass' (1976) stars Josef Bierbichler as Hias, a man with supernatural foresight who predicts a fire that will destroy the town's glassblowing factory. 'Stroszek' (1977) stars Schleinstein as a Berlin street performer recently released from prison who tries to get his life back on track with the help of his prostitute friend Eva (Eva Mattes). 'Nosferatu, the Vampyre' (1979) stars Kinski as the infamous Count Dracula, a peculiarly pale man with a penchant for vampirism. 'Woyzeck' (1979) is a film adaptation of the play by George Büchner telling the story of a lowly soldier who works all the hours he can to provide for his illegitimate child. In 'Fitzcarraldo' (1982), a budding rubber baron sets about trying to transport a steamship over a hill that hides access to an area rich in rubber. The film is based on true events. 'Cobra Verde' (1987) is a drama based on the novel 'The Viceroy of Ouidah' by Bruce Chatwin which sees a dissolute Brazilian rancher who has resulted to working on a gold mine after his land was destroyed by a drought. In 'Whistle and I'll Come to You' (1968) Michael Hordern plays Professor Parkin who heads to a hotel on the east coast of England. While out on a walk he comes across a mysterious bone whistle, the discovery of which ends up having disturbing consequences for him. In 'Whistle and I'll Come to You' (2010) John Hurt stars as James Parkin who, in this version, is a retired astronomer taking a much needed break from caring for his ailing wife. In 'A Warning to the Curious' (1972) Mr Paxton (Peter Vaughan) travels to the English seaside town of Seaburg hoping to find the last of three Anglo Saxon crowns belonging to the Agers family whose last descendant has recently died. In 'The Stalls of Barchester' (1971) Dr. Black (Clive Swift) is cataloguing the Barchester Cathedral Library when he comes across an old diary belonging to Archdeacon Haynes (Robert Hardy) who died mysteriously. In 'Lost Hearts' (1973) young orphan Stephen (Simon Gipps-Kent) goes to stay at the generous Mr. Abney (Joseph O'Conor)'s estate where he is haunted by two children who previously lived in the house. In 'The Ash Tree' (1975) Sir Richard Fell (Edward Petherbridge) inherits his uncle's manor and grounds. He moves in and decides to cut down an ash tree that could prove harmful to the property. In 'The Treasure of Abbot Thomas' (1974) cynical Reverend Somerton (Michael Bryant) is completely close-minded when it comes to paranormal activity. But his steadfast beliefs falter when his search for the treasure of alchemist Abbot Thomas (John Herrington) unleashes a terrifying spectre. In 'The Signalman' (1976), based on the story by Charles Dickens, Denholm Elliott stars as a troubled railway signalman who has witnessed some unsettling sights and sounds along his stretch of track. In 'Stigma' (1977) Katherine Delgado (Kate Binchy) and her family move into a new home but have difficulty removing a menhir from their garden. In 'The Ice House' (1978) Paul (John Stride) goes to stay at a spa resort to help him get over the breakdown of his marriage. In 'A View from a Hill' (2005) historian Dr. Fanshawe (Mark Letheren) visits his friend, Squire Richard (Pip Torrens), and, having broken his own binoculars, borrows a pair through which he can see into the past. In 'Number 13' (2006) Professor Anderson (Greg Wise) is staying in room 12 of a local hotel while working in a cathedral town to authenticate historical documents. But after being disturbed at night, Anderson discovers that a previously missing room 13 has appeared... Finally, Robert Powell reads a selection of tales by M.R. James which were partially dramatised for the series 'Classic Ghost Stories'. In 'Look Back in Anger' (1959) Richard Burton plays angry young man Jimmy Porter in this screen adaptation of John Osborne's ground-breaking stage play. Jimmy, university-educated, articulate and poor, is angry with almost everything and everyone; from the government and the church to his long-suffering wife, Helena (Claire Bloom). In 'The Entertainer' (1960) a tatty, ageing seaside performer is a failure as a family man and as an entertainer. Laurence Olivier plays the excruciating Archie Rice, with an ego that destroys the lives of those closest to him. In 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' (1960), Arthur Seaton (Albert Finney) is a young man filled with a rage perhaps even he doesn't fully understand. Working in the tough environment of a Nottingham factory, he compensates for the drudgery and discipline of his weekday life with weekends spent drinking and womanising. His affair with a fellow factory worker's wife, Brenda (Rachel Roberts), seems especially ill-advised - particularly when Brenda informs him that she is pregnant with his child. With abortion illegal at the time, Arthur and Brenda face a difficult dilemma. Will Arthur face up to the kind of domestic responsibilities he openly scorns or run harder than ever? In 'A Taste of Honey' (1961), when pregnant Manchester teenager Jo (Rita Tushingham) is abandoned by her sailor boyfriend and her man-hungry mother (Dora Bryan) she realises she might have to face life's difficulties all alone. Help then comes in the form of a kind-hearted man named Geoffrey (Murray Melvin) who moves in and takes care of her. The two find happiness together, but soon life moves on... In 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' (1962) Colin Smith (Tom Courtenay), a cynical working class youth, finds himself in a boys' reformatory for robbing a bakery. The governor in charge of the reform school (Michael Redgrave) preaches to his inmates that exercise and physical challenge can permanently destroy a boy's rebellious streak. But Colin is fortunate enough to be on the boss's good side due to his natural running prowess and is offered the chance to train for a race against the local public school. Tensions build as the big day approaches and after a lot of time spent thinking on his lonely runs, Colin might just reconsider his naturally rebellious instincts. In 'Tom Jones' (1963) a country boy who has a taste for wine, women and money enjoys many bawdy exploits. Whilst trying to create his own wealth, Tom Jones (Finney) sets his sights on a girl named Sophie (Susannah York) but her family have other plans for her. In 'The Girl With Green Eyes' (1964) an innocent Catholic girl (Tushingham) moves to Dublin where she falls for an older, more sophisticated man (Peter Finch). The relationship infuriates the girl's father, who tries in vain to end it. Finally, in 'The Knack... and How to Get It' (1965) Michael Crawford stars as Colin, an awkward and naive teacher who shares a flat with smooth-talking womaniser Tolen (Ray Brooks). Keen to capitalise on the sexual revolution occurring around him, Colin asks Tolen for some advice about how to seduce women. His first port of call is to get himself a new, bigger bed; and while he and his other flatmate, Tom (Donal Donnelly) are procuring one, they meet Nancy (Tushingham), an innocent country girl who agrees to come along with them. Things are looking up for Colin... until he gets Nancy back to the flat, where she meets the irresistible Tolen and falls under his spell.
