Efter Chris Nielsen (Robin Williams) dör i en olycka försöker vara så nära sin vackra dödliga fru Annie (Sciorra) som han kan. Med den vänliga själen (Gooding Jr.) som guide börjar han att vänja sig vid sitt nya tillstånd i en miljö som bara kan beskriva som 'himmelsk'. När hans fru tar sitt liv förvisas hon till evigt helvete. Chris försöker finna sin fru så att de skall kunna tillbringa evigheten tillsammans, men ingen har hittills lyckats rädda en själ från ett sådant hemskt öde. To honour the prophecy, a small band of brave believers start on a journey in search of the cathedral. They climb down a deep tunnel, seemingly endless, but emerge in 20th-century Auckland, New Zealand, having been through the middle of the Earth.
