Cary Grant och Deborah Kerr möts på en oceanångare och blir djupt förälskade. "Pinky" Whinney (Charlie Ruggles) och hans fru (Mary Boland) delar kostnaden för en resa till Hollywood tillsammans med paret George (Burns) och Gracie (Allen) och deras enorma hund. Tillsammans upplever de två paren en rad dråpliga missöden under resan västerut, särskilt i en småstad där en sheriff vid namn John Hoxley (W.C. Fields) styr och där mrs Rumford (Alison Skipworth) är hotellägarinna. "Pinky" arresteras och anklagas för att ha stulit 50 000 dollar från den bank där han jobbar ? och för att ha en älskarinna! Fields får chansen att visa upp sitt berömda biljardnummer i samband med att han ska förklara varför han fått smeknamnet "Hederlige" John. Det är ett rent nöje att se Mary Boland fajtas med honom i denna klassiker full av lysande rollprestationer!
