När Jake Blues (John Belushi) släppts ur fängelset, beger sig han och hans bror Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) iväg för att besöka barnhemmet där de växte upp och uppfostrades av nunnor. <br/>De får reda på att kyrkan dragit in sitt stöd till barnhemmet, som kommer att säljas om inte fastighetsskatten betalas inom elva dagar. <br/>Bröderna beslutar att de ska skramla ihop pengarna genom att samla det gamla bluesbandet och riva av ett gig.
