Under ockupationen av Prag hålls staden i ett järngrepp av SS-ledaren Reinhard Heydrich, mer känd under öknamnet "The Hangman". Som huvudansvarig för den metodiska förintelsen av judar är han landets mest hatade man. I juni 1942 skjuts Heydrich ihjäl av kirurgen dr Svoboda och staden lamslås av jakten på gärningsmannen, vars liv nu hänger på en skör tråd i händerna på motståndsrörelsen.<br/><br/>Krigsthrillern HANGMEN ALSO DIE är inspirerad av sanna händelser och är gjord av legendariske Fritz Lang (manus och regi) och Bertolt Brecht (manus), som båda kom till Hollywood efter att ha flytt från Tyskland. Lang hade redan skrivit filmhistoria i hemlandet med "M", Metropolis och Doktor Mabuses testamente och Brecht var berömd som hyllad pjäsförfattare. Filmen gjorde stor succé och nominerades till två Oscar. Under krigsåren vågade ingen släppa filmen på bio i Sverige, men den visades flitigt vid hemliga sammankomster.
