Efter fjorton år i fängelse kommer den före detta IRA-medlemmen Danny Flynn ut från fängelset. He falls in with his old coach, Ike (Ken Stott), and the pair open a gym together. Danny meets his old flame, Maggie (Emily Watson), and hopes to rekindle their affair until he discovers that while he was inside she married his best friend, also an IRA member and now serving time himself. As Danny and Ike's gym attracts young talent and Danny successfully resurrects his boxing career, pressure from IRA thug Harry, an opponent of the burgeoning peace process, threatens to destroy everything they are working towards.

The true story of the artist and writer Christy Brown (Daniel Day-Lewis) who based his autobiography on his experiences of living with cerebral palsy. It recounts the many problems he faced growing up in his native Ireland, and charts the ways in which he developed the use of his left foot - the only limb over which he had any control - to achieve success as an artist. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Actor (Day-Lewis) and Best Supporting Actress (Brenda Fricker).
