Även om det finns några Dylan-album som rankas högre än "Desire", så ligger den ändå däruppe, bland hans bästa någonsin. Inspelad vid tiden för den tumultartade "Rolling Thunder Revue" turnén, fångar den stämningar som är unika för just detta album. Den inledande "Hurricane" är en klassiker som följs av maginifika "Isis" och andra mästerliga låtar, som avslutas med hans brev till hustrun Sara vid tiden för ett vacklande äktenskap. Längsta låten är "Joey" - en 11 minuters berättelse som inte alls känns lång. Så är det med bra låtar. "Desire" är ett av de stora mästerverken.

Detta är Dylans första studioalbum med nyskrivna låtar på 8 år sedan albumet Tempest som kom 2012.

Han pluggade in gitarren redan på föregångaren "Bringing it all back home" och på "Highway 61 revisited" skapade han ett mästerverk som fortfarande nämns som ett av de bästa album som gjorts. Bob Dylan har givetvis gjort fler som är kandidater, men denna går aldrig att gå förbi. De hängivna akustisk-folkmusik-fantasterna som haft Dylan som husgud och som fortfarande hade förhoppningar om att få honom tillbaka insåg här att det var kört. Dylan exploderar i låtar med allt från folk-rock till blues och ren garage-rock. Han var här i sitt livs form och året efter kom "Blonde on blonde". Vilken som är bäst av dessa tre kan man skriva tre doktorsavhandlingar om, men frågan är om inte "Highway 61" ändå är stråt vassare än de övriga.
