Det var inte mycket skillnad mellan opera och oratorium under 1770-talet. Händel försökte bringa litet reda i oordningen och skrev verk som påminner om vad vi idag känner som opera. De var mycket framgångsrika men så småningom avtog deras popularitet och Händel övergick till att skriva oratorier. Det blev hans verkligt stora genombrott. Än idag är hans Messias, med den berömda Halleluja-kören att av de oftast framförda körverken. "Den bästa inspelningen oavsett pris", kallade Classic CD vär kompletta inspelning av Messias och den finns nu att få både komplett och i utdrag.
